Team Fortress 2 Highlander Grand Final

buhly // 31/03-2018

The good ol’ game of Team Fortress 2 from Valve is the subject of two tournaments this year at Copenhagen Games. One tournament in the game mode 6v6 and one in the game mode Highlander (also known as 9v9), each with a prize pool of 3,000 €.

At the Team Fortress 2 area at Copenhagen Games, located to the left at the rear of the venue, you really get the sense of what kind of love gaming communities are made of:

“We tried to make everything happen ourselves as a completely community based thing. We put together all the best teams we had, all the different communities we have, like Esport United, Kritzkast, EssentialsTF. From that we built this amazing production area for all of this to be streamed to those who couldn't attend. The prize pool is a good incentive to come here but ultimately the community is always up for a good competition”, says caster of the Highlander tournament, Jakub ‘Jakeowaty’ Potapczyk.

The around 150 players, divided into 21 teams, in the two Team Fortress 2 tournaments all know each other despite coming from many different parts of the world. Quite a few teams have even traveled all the way from the United States to be here. According to ‘Jakeowaty’, it is this spectacular, closely knit TF2-community that keeps the players travelling far and wide:

“The experiences you get, the friendships you make along the way, that’s what you come for. You just know each other so well and being able to attend a LAN and see each other in real life, that is why this LAN is so popular.”

Strong Opinions VS twitched: check out my winrate on genji
The Team Fortress 2 Highlander tournament started off with two groups with three teams in each. Yesterday the winners of the groups were found, Strong Opinions from group 1 and "twitched: check out my winrate on genji" from group 2.

Today at around 13.30 the teams where ready to face each other in the Grand Final, a BO5 for the first prize of 1,600 €.

Line up first half:

  • Strong Opinions
  • Thalash - scout
  • ØRA Raptor - soldier
  • Steve! - pyro
  • alle - demoman
  • Emilio Estevez - heavy
  • Seal - engineer
  • CeeJaey - medic

  • Liko - pyro
  • Joseph__ - demoman
  • Bloodis - heavy
  • Bonobo - engineer

  • Der_Milchmann - sniper
  • Deox - spy

Map 1: koth_warmtic_b6
The twisted map pick, Warmtic, was a koth map which means that whoever gets three points first wins the map. Twisted got off to a great start, taking the first point. Unfortunately, no points followed and Strong Opinions secured the first map with a 3-1 score. That really hurt twisted, losing their own map like that.

Map 2: cp_gullywash_final1
Strong Opinions’ map was a 5 Capture Points format with a 30 minute time limit. It started as an evenly balanced match, momentum changing back and forth until the score was 2-2. But solid fragging from top scorer Steve! along with ØRA Raptor's double shovel kill were highlights as the next four rounds went to Strong Opinions for the 6-2 win.

3. map: koth_product_rc8

After a short break and a change of sides, Strong Opinions played red and twisted were blue. Strong Opinions has switched around the lineup roles except for Emilio while twisted kept their first half lineup intact.

Strong Opinions take the first round but Deox pulls off some great moves to equalize at 1-1. The success is short lived, though, and Strong Opions find themselves back in front 2-1 and with momentum on their side, they were unstoppable. The map ends at 3-1 and STRONG OPINIONS show just why they are considered the best in the world right now.

During this final map, you felt a real surge from the crowd. The tension can be cut with a knife at times and you really get a feel of just how special this community is.

Caster of the Highlander tournament, Jakub ‘Jakeowaty’ Potapczyk:

”It was a very good game that Strong Opinions won, an established team with many seasons behind them. The twitched players have known each other for a long time, but they never played together as a team before. Strong Opinions had this advantage of being a team before this LAN. They were definitely the favorites and in the end, deserved winners. Twitched didn't let go till the very end, though. The game was much tighter than it might look on paper. I mean, Strong Opinions won the game 3-0 but it was still a very balanced game, very long and very fun to watch.“

It certainly was fun! An amazing game to watch and an amazing community to be a part of.

EDITOR: Later that night Ascenchilada played MGE CHAD and won 5-0 in the 6v6 GRAND FINAL.
